Arctic Blast Likely at end of the Week – Gulf Coast Storm Center

A blast of arctic air is likely late this week, and should bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

Both the EPS and GEFS are advertising the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) to go into negative territory around the 6th/7th. This would favor development of an upper-level trough over the eastern two-thirds of the country next week; it would also favor an unseasonably cold air mass settling in late this week/this upcoming weekend.

If this comes to fruition, which is looking likely since models have been locked onto this for a few days, we could be looking at temperature 10 – 20° (C) below normal. That would translate to lows in the 30s and 40s and highs in the 40s and 50s.
