Winter Weather Event to Impact Portions of the Texas Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Mississippi Tuesday – Gulf Coast Storm Center

It is very likely that a winter weather event is going to impact the upper Texas Gulf Coast, North and Central Louisiana, Central Mississippi, the mid Texas Gulf Coast Tuesday night into Wednesday, and possibly South Louisiana throughout the day Tuesday, and South Mississippi and Central and South Alabama and the Western Florida Panhandle Tuesday night into Wednesday morning

What: A potent arctic cold front is going to push through, bringing much colder air in behind it. Some moisture and lift will be present on the back side of the front, allowing for winter precipitation (sleet, freezing rain, snow).

Where and when: Currently, a wintry mix is expected to impact the upper Texas Gulf, Louisiana (including Shreveport), and Central Mississippi during the day Tuesday, and the mid Texas Gulf Coast (including Corpus Christi) late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

Graphic from National Weather Service Corpus Christi regarding the expected winter mix.

A mix of mainly freezing rain and sleet is expected along the mid and upper Texas Gulf Coast, with a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow expected across North and Central Louisiana, with mainly snow for Central Mississippi.

It is possible that a wintry mix will impact South Louisiana during the day Tuesday, and  South Mississippi, Central and South Alabama, and the Western Florida Panhandle Tuesday night and Wednesday. This seems unlikely as of now, though. Most of the model guidance shows little to no post-frontal moisture and lift by Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

Accumulations: Overall, snowfall accumulations are going to be light. Snowfall accumulations < 1 – 2″ are expected across North and Central Louisiana, with little to no snowfall accumulation currently anticipated for the mid to upper Texas Gulf Coast (because sleet and/or freezing rain will be the main form(s) of winter precipitation along the mid/upper Texas Gulf Coast).

Light to potentially moderate freezing rain (ice) accumulations, which will occur along the mid to upper Texas Gulf Coast, are expected, with minor ice accumulations possible across North and Central Louisiana.

If a wintry mix does impact South Louisiana, Central and South Mississippi, and the Western Florida Panhandle (which is not likely as of now), little to no accumulation is currently expected.

Impacts: Some impacts to travel will be likely, and some isolated power outages are a possibility.
