Cold Air to Arrive Just in Time for Christmas – Gulf Coast Storm Center

A strong upper-level trough is going to dig into the Central part of the country Saturday into Sunday. This will result in a cold front sliding east across the South Saturday – Monday, which will usher in a cold, arctic air-mass around Monday.

Timing: There is still some uncertainty in regard to when the front will pass through some locations. This is because the front might slow down some over parts of Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday.

If it does, it would result in the front not passing through some areas until the first half of the day Monday, which would cause temperatures not to begin to fall until Monday afternoon and evening for some locations.

Temperatures: It is a bit early to know exactly how cold it will get behind the front.

However, current indications are that temperatures will drop at least 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) below seasonal levels across our entire region (map of our coverage area here). This would mean highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s Christmas day.

Rain: Some showers and thunderstorms will be likely on along and ahead of the front as it progresses from west to east on Saturday and Christmas Eve (Sunday).
